Darkness and silence
Envelop me;
A soft, feather eiderdown,
An empty void.
Deathly quiet
Cavernous vacuum;
The dead of night,
A magnet for memories.
Longings held at bay
By the bustle of day,
Flood my heart;
A deluge of emotions
Drawn from deep.
Tumbling in the tsunami,
My heart hurts
With happiness
As I grab this second chance
To see those once more
Whose journeys left footprints in my soul.
I drink cups of tea with Mom.
She sings and cleans
And we share thoughts
Of our lives and wishes,
With her hands in the sink
As she washes the dishes.
Laughter, tears,
Anger, fears;
More time with childhood friends
Long gone.
Lives cut cruelly short;
Dreams and plans that came to nought.
Sitting in that sunlit lounge,
Conversation with my Dad
Reminds me life is balance,
Good and bad.
Here comes my Gran;
She’s young again
And in her positive,
Philosophical way,
Smiles and tells me
“Remember, seize the day”.
Now their memories fade with the black
Into the grey of morn.
In the distance,
A car horn
Joins the singing birds
Proclaiming daybreak.
It is a new dawn
And I must wake.
