In this machine of a thousand engines!
The rushing wind and cheering crowd
Melt against the deep-throated purr
That shakes the ground,
As we rumble and roar
Along hills and bends
At the foot
Of our table-top mountain.
This mechanised dragon,
The beast of Christmas present,
Growls and roars
Past the cheering crowd,
Enamel and chrome flanks glistening
As the sun beams down and winks
At teddy-bears riding pillion
Behind leather-clad grizzly beards.
The echoing roar
As we pass under bridges
Sends tidings of cheer
For the orphans to hear
That Santa’s elves are not all pixies;
And a metal and leather-clad
Dragon of kindess
Will appear for them each year.
